Selfless Words & Actions can Illuminate the Whole Universe
Poverty Solutions’ Healthy-Path is our health and human services program designed to combat childhood obesity and serve low-income veterans and adults in need of physical and mental health services while strengthening families and building communities.
Our goal is to provide health education, nutrition and physical fitness activities to LA County low-income children in an effort to increase health, academic achievement and overall well-being while decreasing childhood obesity. According to the County of Los Angeles Public Health Report of September 2011, "Marked geographic disparities in obesity rates have been observed throughout the county. Obesity results from an interactive mix of biological, behavioral, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. Economic hardship is one of the major underlying factors contributing to the obesity epidemic. Families living in low-income neighborhoods tend to have limited access to affordable nutritious foods, safe playgrounds or parks, and timely medical care, challenging their ability to lead healthy and active life styles."
“Healthy-Path” offers a multi-disciplinary holistic (in-school and after-school) health, nutrition and physical activities program that serve low-income children 5 to 18 years of age, across the Los Angeles County. The program promotes (1) an In-School Nutrition Clubs where children will have increased access to healthy food education and nutrition; and (2) an After-School athletic/physical activity forum for low-income children in LA County.
Childhood obesity has become a serious medical concern for children and adolescents in the U.S. According to the LA Public Health Report in September, 2011, Nationwide, an estimated 15% of children and adolescents are "overweight." In Los Angeles County, the rate of overweight children is even higher: A statewide physical fitness testing program of 5th, 7th, and 9th grade students attending public schools in 2001 found that 21% of students in LA County were overweight and an additional 19% were at risk for becoming overweight. The obesity rate in 2008 was highest among African-Americans (31%), followed by Latinos (24%), Whites (16%), and Asians (6%). Los Angeles County area underprivileged, low-income children ages 5-18 are our target of change.
Poverty Solutions’ partnership with Life is Networking Knowledge and Pink Lotus healthcare led to the launching the South Los Angeles Community Health Coalition in March 2010. South LA Community Health Coalition is a collaborative partnership of community-based organizations, healthcare providers, and community leaders in South Los Angeles. The coalition’s objective is to bridge health disparity among low-income residents of South Los Angeles regardless of their insurance coverage. Membership in the coalition includes: (1) Poverty Solutions, a community-based economic development and low-income empowerment; (2) Life is Networking Knowledge, a health and wellness public advocacy group; (3) Pink Lotus Healthcare, a South Los Angeles based health clinic; (4) Watts Healthcare Corporation (WHCC), a federally qualified health center and licensed non-profit community clinic serving residents of South Los Angeles; (5) Warner Chilcott, Plc., a global corporation; (6) National Health Foundation (NHF), an organization that serves the community, health care providers and policy makers by anticipating and addressing emerging health care issues; (7) Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, an organization that helps the disadvantaged, the at-risk and the needy; (8) L.A. Community Care Medical Associates, a private clinic serving to residents of Inglewood and Hawthorne; (9) Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, based in South LA.
Members of our team have over a century of combined experience in education, research, physical training, behavior modification, community service and health services in terms of working with low-income populations. Our current Board is made up of educators, nurses, social workers, community leaders and members of the community who are dedicated, passionate professionals and non-professionals.
Without our Healthy-Path program, we believe that the disadvantaged, low-income children/families would not have access at all to these services that we provide and therefore, the cycle will repeat itself and the numbers of obese children in the Los Angeles County will increase causing health care costs to reach billions of dollars.
